Stone: Ruby
Birthstone: Ruby is the July birthstone and also symbolises the 40th wedding anniversary.
Country of origin: Since 600 A.D. Burma (Myanmar) has produced the majority of the world’s rubies, and the finest as well. Other countries that produce rubies include Sri Lanka, Thailand and Mozambique.
About the stone: Ruby is one of the most rare and coveted of traditional gems, and almost as hard and durable as diamond. The name comes from the Latin word “ruber”, meaning “red” – the color of love and passion. It is believed by some to alleviate body pain and help with blood and circulatory problems, low energy, heart problems, and detoxification. Ruby is said to promote overall wellness and inspire better health.
What is the history of ruby? Records suggest that rubies were traded along the North Silk Road in China as early as 200 BC. For thousands of years, it has been a sought-after gem for jewellery, worn by European royalty and the upper class. In medieval times, people wore rubies for health, wealth, wisdom, and love. In Burma and China, ancient warriors adorned their armour with the gem to provide protection in battle. Some even inserted rubies into their flesh, believing it made them invincible. Rubies were also rubbed on the skin to promote vitality and youth.
Caring for ruby: This stone is best cleaned with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives and avoid exposure to chlorine. To prevent scratching, store jewelry in a soft cloth or padded container.
