Stone: Malachite
Birthstone: Malachite is the birthstone for April and May.
Country of origin: Mined in Russia, Australia, The Congo, and Australia.
About the stone: Malachite takes its name from Greek Μολοχίτης λίθος molochites lithos, "mallow-green stone". The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant. Malachite flushes out toxic emotions and unwanted negative energy. It gives inner strength and confidence, helps you embrace change and provides powers of protection.
What is the history of malachite? It was loved by the Ancient Greeks and the Egyptians who used it as a protective gem. It was extracted from the mines of Suez as far back as 4000 BC. Big fans of the ornate and eye-catching green stone, the Egyptians found a thousand uses for malachite - from grounding it down to pigment for Cleopatra-inspired eye shadow to adorning their necks and wrists with the gleaming gemstones. In the middle ages, malachite was used by healers to soothe stomach ailments and to protect against curses and negative energies.
Caring for malachite: The best way to clean your malachite is with plain water and a soft cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives and avoid exposure to chlorine.
