About Pearls

Stone: Pearls

Birthstone: Pearls represent the birthstone for June and are aligned with the zodiac sign of Gemini.

Country of origin: Freshwater pearls come from freshwater mussels and are produced in the United States, Japan and China.

About the stone: Pearls are the only gemstone to come from a living creature, with all others being created under the Earth's crust. The oysters and mussels they come from are also consumed as seafood, whilst the oyster shell produces mother of pearl, which is used to create accessories too.

What is the history of pearls? Thought to be the world’s oldest gem, the oldest natural pearl was recently discovered on an island off Abu Dhabi. The 8,000-year-old pearl was found during excavations at Marawah Island. The Romans and Egyptians prized pearls and used them as decorative items as far back as the 500 BC. Chinese records mention them earlier still. Known as the “Queen of Gems” pearls have always had an allure and held a strong place in history, culture, tradition and fashion.

Caring for pearls: We recommend cleaning with a soft damp cloth and thoroughly drying afterwards. Avoid applying makeup, hairspray, lotion or perfume once your pearls are on. Pearls are prone to scratches, so store them separately in fabric-lined compartments. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives and avoid exposure to chlorine.
